I just read Pull Me Under and loved it. Highly recommended. I read it once for the narrative- which was dark and light, fascinating, intriguing . . . the main character is hafu- half Japanese and half American- and the novel is set both in America and in Japan. She captures the weirdness of Japanese culture- and American culture for that matter. I am now re-reading it for the language, which is evocative, intoxicating, delightful - her similes and metaphors are superb, it is a serious book with genuine humor; and, yes transcendence, there as well. "But I can be whole, too; I can be unsplit and complete in the fragmented way that a life is a life." These are words of wisdom; transcendence. the awareness of the essential non-duality of life: both complete and fragmented.Or this: "I felt like I was getting away with something, and said so when the wine was gone. Sal replied that that was what happiness felt like."
