Out From Under by Michael McDermott is an outstanding achievement. Once again McDermott delivers an insightful look at the human condition. This is a record of complexity, darkness and light, hope and despair. On one track McDermott even sings “I’m so tired of singing all these sad songs”. However, he knows full well that there is truth in this sadness, and McDermott tells the truth. These days, that is a precious commodity. The way I heard it, McDermott has lived it all. From ascending rock star to homeless substance abuser. Maybe that’s why his songs are so authentic. So mesmerizing. So utterly essential. That he has traveled the long road back is very, very good news for us all.My favorite song just might be Sideways. It is a soaring, powerful, dizzying flight through the cosmos. From the Bard to Chicago’s nether regions. (Do I detect echoes of the Hibbing bard as well?) Anyway, you just have to hang on, try to keep up, and enjoy the ride. His is the best kind of work. Songs that deserve close and repeated listening to fully appreciate. To be sure, McDermott gets his wish – it’s by no means all sad songs. There is some good old rock and roll. Workday laments and dreams of better days. Dogged self-determination along with longing for love on an ancestral sea. A rich and rewarding mix. This record delivers on every level. While McDermott might not be one of our most well known artists, he is certainly one of our most knowing. His talent and ability to share his knowledge is a rare gift – to all of us.I have seen McDermott perform live. He commands the stage. His voice ringing out while his songs wring out your heart. If you have the opportunity to see a show – DO NOT MISS IT. While you are waiting for the show, do yourself a favor and pick up some other records from the McDermott catalog.
